Despite his rare participation in battle, Tenzin's abilities allowed him to effectively pass on the art to his Airbending children and Avatar Korra, all of whom became powerful in the art themselves, ensuring that the teachings and techniques would live on and despite his the new recruits who have just acquired airbending abilities.

Tenzin is well-versed in all airbending techniques and may have even created his own technique such as a previously unseen variant of Aang's air scooter technique, conjuring a "wheel" of air which not only allowed him to evade attacks, but was powerful enough to deflect the claws of the mecha tanks.

He is also able to use a glider by bending the air around it. Tenzin is skilled in creating extremely powerful tornadoes that are strong enough to throw the mecha tanks in the air. He was also capable of creating an air dome of sorts to protect himself and others from any harmful gases. This name fits Tenzin perfectly, since after Aang's death, the responsibility rested on his shoulders to teach Airbending not only to Korra and his children, but the new generation of Airbenders that emerged after Harmonic Convergence.

Many fans have praised The Legend of Korra 's creators for confirming the romance between Korra and Asami in the graphic novels that continued the story beyond the animated series. In the graphic novels, there's a scene in which Kya not only voices her support of Korra's relationship, but spoke about her own experiences in coming out to Aang and Katara, something that was never even mentioned in the series.

When faced with a difficult dilemma, Tenzin is most often seen stroking on his goatee. Not only did this little quirk make him feel all the more realistic, but it was inspired by the co-creator, executive producer, and story editor of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. Given how much the teams that worked on this show pulled from other tales and cultures to make the world of Avatar feel just as real as an animated world could, fans can only wonder what other staff members who worked on these series inspired some more of their favorite character traits.

After traveling the world, it's no surprise that Kya might've picked up a few strange habits, or even techniques, along the way. After Bumi's sporadic Airbending abilities were made public after Harmonic Convergence, Kya remarked that she had sensed a shift in his aura after the events of Book 2.
